Between 29 September and 6 October 2024, CEAM, in collaboration with the Madeira Regional Canoeing Association (ARCM), actively contributed to the 2024 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships, held in Madeira.
As part of the ecoRoute project, this collaboration supported the promotion of sustainable practices throughout the event, which brought together 451 athletes from 35 countries.
A key initiative focused on reducing the use of single-use plastics, through the provision of reusable bottles and drinking water refill points at the São Lázaro Nautical Center. This action significantly contributed to lowering the environmental footprint of the event and encouraged more responsible consumption practices among participants and visitors.
In parallel, through a dedicated stand provided by ARCM at the event venue, CEAM engaged with athletes, visitors, locals, and tourists, raising awareness about the ecoRoute project and its mission to manage, safeguard, and promote Madeira’s underwater cultural and natural heritage.
This initiative highlights the importance of integrating sustainability into major sporting events, while strengthening public awareness and engagement with marine environmental protection of Underwater Cultural and Natural Heritage.
