On 27 July 2025, a large-scale clean-up operation took place in the harbour of Saint-Pierre, Martinique, as part of the ecoRoute project, bringing together local authorities, organisations, and volunteers in a joint effort to protect the marine environment.
Organised by the Association Archéologie Petites Antilles (AAPA) in collaboration with the City of Saint-Pierre, the initiative combined both land-based and underwater clean-up activities, highlighting the importance of tackling marine pollution at all levels.
The action saw the mobilisation of 43 divers, supported by local diving clubs and volunteers, including A Papadlo Plongée Martinique, DIAJ Plongée, Surcoufdive, Océana, and CSCP. Together, participants collected approximately 3,500 litres of waste, significantly contributing to the preservation of the marine ecosystem and the iconic black sand beaches of the area.
This initiative demonstrated the power of community engagement and collaboration in addressing marine pollution, while reinforcing ecoRoute’s mission to promote the protection and sustainable management of underwater cultural and natural heritage.
Through actions like this, ecoRoute continues to encourage citizens and stakeholders to actively participate in safeguarding marine environments for future generations.
