A new Interpretive Space dedicated to the Underwater Cultural and Natural Heritage of the Azores is opening its doors to the public on 1st December at 16:00, at the historic Porto Pim Whale Factory in Faial.
This unique exhibition space invites the local community and visitors alike to explore the rich maritime history, underwater archaeology, and the deep connection between Faial and the Atlantic Ocean.
The exhibition brings together the results of over two decades of research conducted in the bay and harbour of Horta, revealing artefacts, archaeological contexts, and stories that have remained hidden beneath the sea for centuries.
Developed within the framework of the ecoRoute project, the content combines scientific and educational material, integrating archaeology, biodiversity, technology, and communication. Among the highlights are significant artefacts from the Nossa Senhora da Luz and Ivory Shipwreck, as well as an immersive 360° virtual dive experience at the Central Wreck located in Porto Pim Bay.
The initiative has been implemented in collaboration with CHAM and the Associação de Turismo Sustentável do Faial, reinforcing a shared commitment to ocean literacy and the promotion of the cultural and natural heritage of island communities.
This new space marks an important milestone in bringing underwater heritage closer to society, fostering awareness, engagement, and appreciation for the unique marine environment of the Azores.
