The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH) is the regulator for cultural heritage in Malta and aims to fulfill the duties of the State in ensuring the protection, valorisation and accessibility of Malta’s cultural heritage.

Focus on research, analysis, data management and scientific investigations regarding cultural assets constitute a major part of the duties performed by SCH. Our entity is currently looking into innovating its research analysis tools and capabilities through the use of 3D modelling, LiDAR, computer and AI based technologies, GIS and other platforms to enhance, communicate, propagate and develop a deeper appreciation and respect for our cultural heritage.

In addition, SCH is responsible for several consultee roles and international commitments, including planning legislation, built heritage, illicit trade, and underwater archaeology. To ensure appropriate measures are taken to identify, research and protect underwater cultural heritage in line with the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, Malta ratified the UNESCO 2001 Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. As a result, due to its position, role and experience, SCH is able to collaborate with and lead other key partners across Europe to play a significant part in the development of Blue Culture Technology.
